Electronic Arts announced today that they have a new studio, Cliffhanger Games, dedicated to AAA games in Seattle. Alongside that news, they dropped an announcement for their next big team-up, this time with Marvel Games: a game focused on Black Panther.
Cliffhanger Games is bringing their (triple) A-game right off the bat. Monolith Studios’ Kevin Stephens is heading the studio. The team will consist of veterans that have worked on games like Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Halo Infinite, God of War, and Call of Duty.
According to EA’s announcement, the Black Panther game will be both third-person and single-player.
“We’re dedicated to delivering fans a definitive and authentic Black Panther experience,” Stephens explained, “giving them more agency and control over their narrative than they have ever experienced in a story-driven video game. Wakanda is a rich Super Hero sandbox, and our mission is to develop an epic world for players who love Black Panther and want to explore the world of Wakanda as much as we do.”
While not much else is known about the game, rumors circulated back in July 2022. During Giant Bomb’s Game Mess Mornings broadcast, Jeff Grubb gave some insight into the at-the-time unannounced game.
Internally, “Project Rainier” was rumored back then to be a completely open-world sandbox game. The game would be “linear” in the same way that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is.
The game allegedly starts with the Black Panther having died. Players would take the reigns of the new Black Panther, learning what it means to have the mantle.
Keep in mind that any rumored information isn’t “official”, and should be taken with a grain of salt. But, the rumors got the head of the studio correct and that EA was publishing the game. So, now we wait to find out more info about this Wakandan adventure.
