Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Release Date May Have Just Leaked

One of the most anticipated upcoming titles from PlayStation Studios is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 from Insomniac Games. While we’ve seen little of the game since its reveal and it still lacks a formal release date, we might now have a much better idea of when we’ll be reunited with Peter Parker and Miles Morales. 

Actor Tony Todd, perhaps best known for his role in the Candyman films, is the performance actor giving life to the Insomniac version of Venom. In a response to a fan on Twitter commenting with enthusiasm about the game, Todd stated:

“Looks like September! Massive publicity coming in august. Commercials start dropping in august so I’m told. Hold on to your … and hold breath! Gonna be necessary.” 

This does not contradict what little has been officially stated regarding the game, with PlayStation confirming back in 2022 that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was slated to launch at some point in Fall 2023. This would however, be on the earlier end of a possible launch window in the fall, though it’s also possible that the game could be pushed back internally before an official release date is announced. 

If this release date is true, it means that the second big Spider-Man title from Insomniac Games will be launching almost exactly five years after the first game. It also puts the title directly head-to-head with Bethesda Game Studios’ Starfield, a widely anticipated Xbox console exclusive, which is launching on Sep. 6, 2023, after being delayed to allow for polish. 

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is of high importance to Sony, as it is the only PS5 exclusive first-party title officially slated for calendar year 2023. The Spider-Man games are also some of the best-selling first-party PlayStation games of the last few years. 

Marvel’s Spider-Man from Insomniac Games first launched back on Sep. 7, 2018, with positive critical and commercial reception. By August 2019, the game crossed 13 million copies sold, a milestone that coincided with Sony acquiring Insomniac Games, cementing a relationship that went back to the Spyro games on the original PlayStation.

Insomniac Games, a studio praised for an efficient production pipeline, was quick in creating a follow-up to the web-slinging hit. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a smaller game focused on the titular young hero, released on the PS4 and PS5 as a launch title for Sony’s next-generation console on Nov. 10, 2020. 

This smaller game was again a critical and commercial hit, and the two existing Spider-Man games have together crossed a total of 33 million copies sold as of May 2022, cementing Insomniac’s place as one of the leading teams under PlayStation Studios. That number has no doubt continued to climb as both Spider-Man games were ported to PC in 2022, with Dutch studio Nixxes Games — added to Sony’s first-party roster in 2021 to aid with the company’s burgeoning efforts with PC ports — co-developing the ports. 

Outside of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Insomniac Games is also currently working on a Wolverine game for the PS5. Even less is officially known about this title, though industry reporter Jeff Grubb at Giant Bomb has stated he’s heard that Marvel’s Wolverine will launch in fall 2024, though the possibility of it being pushed back to sometime in early 2025 can’t be ruled out.
