Surprise! Nintendo’s unscheduled January Nintendo Direct rundown
This morning, Nintendo broadcast a surprise Nintendo Direct presentation which took everyone by surprise. We hadn’t heard much about the Big N’s plans since before the holiday period last year. Everyone thought that we would be hearing from Nintendo soon, but no one thought big announcements like this would be dropped unannounced. Here are the new surprises they had to show us.
The World Ends With You Final Remix
Ten years after its release, The World Ends With You is getting remade for the Nintendo Switch. The whole game is going to receive an update. The two screen gameplay is going to be merged down into a one screen tag team system. Players will be able to choose between either touchscreen controls or Joycon controls. It will also include new content including a “sizeable new scenario” that sheds further light on the game’s plot. The World Ends With You Final Remix will release for the Switch sometime this year, though a specific release date has not been given.
Pokken Tournament DX DLC
Pokken Tournament DX will be receiving new DLC characters in two waves. Wave one will allow players to play as Aegislash and will allow them to use Mega Raquaza and Mimikyu as support Pokemon. It will be available January 31. Rave two will be available on March 23 and will allow players to play as Blastoise. It will also let them use Mew and Celebi as support Pokemon. The Deluxe Battle Pack, featuring both waves, is available for purchase now and buying it will give you immediate access to a new set of avatar items.
Kirby Star Allies
A few new abilities were showcased for the upcoming Kirby Star Allies. Artist is a new ability that allows Kirby to paint enemies from his past and make them come to life. Spider allows Kirby to wrap his enemies up in webs and traverse webs that he spins. The trailer also showed how Kirby can mix and match his powers with his friends in co-op mode. Apparently there are even four player copy abilities, like the train and friends star that allow all four characters to attack at once. Kirby Star Allies will release on March 16.

Hyrule Warriors Ultimate Edition
As a companion to the recently released Fire Emblem Warriors, Hyrule Warriors is also coming to the Nintendo Switch. This new version of the game will include all the DLC from both the 3DS and Wii U version of the original game and combines all other content from both versions. It also includes a brand new same screen co-op mode and new Breath of the Wild themed costumes for Link and Zelda. Hyrule Warriors Ultimate Edition will launch in Spring 2018.
Mario Tennis Aces
A new Mario Tennis game is being developed by the same people who did… Golden Sun!? That’s weird. This will be the first Mario Tennis game to have a full story campaign since Mario Tennis: Power Tour on the GBA. The story mode will include missions, mini-games, and even boss battles. Mario Tennis Aces releases in Spring 2018.
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana
A full port of this PS4/PS Vita/PC RPG will be released on the Switch sometime this summer.
Super Mario Odyssey Update
A free update is coming to Super Mario Odyssey adding new post-game content. A new online asynchronous multiplayer mode called Balloon World will be added. In this mode, you are tasked with hiding one balloon somewhere around Super Mario Odyssey’s many world. You are then tasked with finding the balloons hidden by other players. You move up global leaderboards by putting balloons in hard to reach spots, or quickly finding hidden balloons. You essentially get to come up with your own power moons and find power moons created by other people, with a touch of speedrunning added in for good measure.
The update will also include new outfits including a Sunshine Shades hat and outfit, a Musician Hat and Suit, and a Knight Helmet and Armor. It will also include new filters for snapshot mode, if you are just too addicted to taking selfies. This new free update will be available this February.
SNK Heroines Tag Team Frenzy
You know what the Switch needs more of? Fighting games! Luckily SNK is here to fill the gap. They are creating a new casual fighting game featuring the female heroines of their many fighting series. The game will feature easy one button combos, a two-on-two tag team system, and Smash Bros style items that alter the state of the match. Matches have to be ended with a super move, so prepare to show off your swag. Of course, what would any fan service fighter be without a costume creation mode? Time to put all these girls in bunny ears! SNK Heroines Tag Team Frenzy will release on the Switch this summer.
Arcade Archive NeoGeo Art of Fighting 2
The original Art of Fighting 2 is available for purchase today on the Nintendo eShop.

The surprise strategy game hit of last year is getting some DLC. The pack, available this spring, will include a new level and new playable character, Donkey Kong. Donkey Kong throws bananas as boomerangs, but that’s all we know about him so far.
A port of Payday 2 will be coming to the Nintendo Switch on February 27. The Switch version will have a timed-exclusive new character, Joy the computer whiz, who has unique hacking related perks. In addition, all of the game’s menus will be able to be navigated by the Switch’s touch screen controls.
Fe and Celeste
Indie games Fe and Celeste now have concrete release dates. Fe will release on February 16 while Celeste will be available January 25.
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
A port of the Wii U’s Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze will be available on the Switch on May 4. It will include Funky Kong as a new playable character. Funky can double jump, hover, perform infinite rolls and perform infinite underwater corkscrews. He can also use his surf board to bounce off water or shield himself from spikes. He is sure to be a speedrunner’s best friend.
Dark Souls Remastered
Finally we have a treat for the hardcore gamers in the audience. Dark Souls is heading to the Switch on May 25. We don’t know much about the port, and it’s unclear whether or not it will include extra content. Stay tuned for more info.
