The RZA partners with Atari for video game music project
Wu-Tang Clan head honcho and hip-hop legend The RZA announced that he’s collaborating with Atari to make an album entirely inspired by Atari game music.
"I'm so excited to work on these iconic games to deliver what I believe will be one of my best albums," said RZA. "I am going to invite some of my friends to join me and it will be Game On with the first beat!"
The RZA is a big fan of the 8-bit video game era of the 1980s and Atari dominated the era with games like Asteroids, Centipede, Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Frogger, and Pong. While there’s already a pretty healthy and active 8-bit music scene out there with hip-hop artists sampling game music (Mega Ran aka Random is a favorite of ours), The RZA looks to add his signature touch to the genre.
"We are thrilled to partner with RZA, one of the greatest hip-hop producers of all time," added Fred Chesnais, Chief Executive Officer, Atari. "RZA is a multi-talented artist and soundtrack virtuoso and we cannot wait to hear the new tracks he creates based on Atari's iconic video game sounds and music."
Production has yet to start on the project, so a timetable of when we’ll hear the music is still up in the air.
