PC dominates the platform wars at E3 2019

After another year of game reveals that served to shock and awe audiences everywhere, E3 has come to a close.  So, let’s look at every game announced at E3 by platform to get an idea of how the landscape of the gaming community is changing compared to recent years.

All in all, this E3 was an odd one. Without Sony present both the Xbox One and the PS4 saw a drop in overall numbers at the conference, but the number of titles at E3 remained close to the average of around 160. This is largely due to the explosive growth of PC as a platform this year, but also because multiplatform titles took center stage this year.

Let’s take a look at how it all breaks down.

  Total games at E3: 164   PC: 124 PS4: 71 Xbox: 68 Switch: 50

PC brings nearly twice the titles to E3 2019 than any other platform

As you might expect, because Sony skipped E3 the total number of PS4 titles at the conference dropped considerably and most of what we did see were multiplatform releases from other large developers. We didn’t see anything about The Last of Us 2, and in general Sony held true to their promise that they didn’t have anything significant planned for E3 this year.

Last year we saw 119 PS4 titles take the stage or otherwise kick out an announcement trailer for E3, but this year that number dropped to a dismal 71 games. Not a surprising dip considering Sony didn’t even make an appearance, but undeniably significant, especially when you consider that PS4 exclusives were nearly non-existent at E3 this year.

You would expect Microsoft to bring a stellar lineup to steal the show while Sony is away, but the Xbox’s overall numbers were just as sparse as their friends in blue. Xbox had 68 titles on display compared to the 107 titles we saw last year and it’s hard to see that as anything less than a response to Sony’s absence.

This could also be because Sony and Microsoft are each gearing up for their respective next gen consoles, stowing away exclusives and keeping tight lipped about new launch titles for the PS5 and Project Scarlett. Both of which could be slated for a 2020 release.

Meanwhile, Nintendo brought a lineup of 50 games populated primarily with ports and remasters, and for the first time in years their E3 library was just a short sprint from catching up with the Xbox One and PS4 in raw numbers.

This brings us full circle to PC, which had one of its biggest years at E3 to date. With a lineup of 124 games in total, PC as a platform could be found on over three quarters of the 164 games present at E3 this year. A huge contributing factor may have been the E3 VR showcase as well as the size of the PC Gaming Show, which arguably had one of the most enjoyable E3 conferences this year.

In terms of raw numbers, PC rinsed the competition this year, with nearly double the total titles available compared to any other platform. Normally, this would be a close race, but with Sony and Microsoft essentially taking a back seat this year it was PC as a platform’s chance to shine.

It’s interesting to see that the days where PC was often left to the wayside in favor of console exclusive releases is dead and buried. This year at E3 was arguably one of the best years for PC gaming as a whole because of the sheer size of the available library coming to the platform.

That said, quantity doesn’t necessarily mean quality, and there’s no doubt that this year is just setting the stage for a truly competitive platform war for the coming conferences. PC as a platform is chugging away, and Sony and Microsoft are hard at work on the PS5 and Project Scarlett, so we can expect E3 to continue to grow next year when all the players arrive on the field ready to play.
