Overwatch’s second anniversary event includes new and returning content
May 24, 2018 will mark the two-year anniversary of Overwatch’s full launch, and Blizzard plans to celebrate the milestone in a pretty big way.
According to the official Overwatch Twitter account, the second year anniversary celebrations will actually begin on Tuesday May 22, two days before the anniversary milestone. There will naturally be new cosmetic items to earn (50 in total), and every player who logs in during the event will receive a free anniversary loot box that’s guaranteed to contain one Legendary tier item. Blizzard will also be selling a bundle of 50 loot boxes that includes a second guaranteed Legendary.
Overwatch’s free-for-all Deathmatch mode will be getting a new map called Petra and a competitive playlist that will feature placement matches, skill rating divisions, and leaderboards. During the event’s duration, past seasonal modes and brawls will also be returning on a rotating basis, and judging from the animated gif Blizzard included in its tweet, one of those returning modes will be the co-op Halloween event Junkenstein’s Revenge. Loot boxes for past seasonal events will also be available, so if there’s an event-specific skin you missed out on in the past, the second year anniversary event will offer you another opportunity to get it.
The second year anniversary event will run from May 22 to June 11. May 22 will also see the launch of the Overwatch Legendary Edition, a special digital-only version of the game that comes packaged with 15 character skins that include Legendary and Epic skins as well as the Origin skins that came with the Overwatch Origins Edition. Lastly, if you don’t yet own Overwatch but you want to try it out while the anniversary event is live, Blizzard will be hosting a free weekend that runs May 25-28. The free weekend will be available on both PC and consoles.
