Overwatch’s Lucio will soon be getting some major changes

Blizzard has shown in the past that it’s not afraid to drastically alter how specific Overwatch heroes function if they deem it necessary, and now it has announced that just such a series of changes will soon be coming to the rocking healer hero Lucio.

During a recent Reddit AMA, Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan discussed Lucio and some of the major changes Blizzard is making to him. Specifically, the following changes are being made to Lucio’s abilities and gameplay traits:

  • Crossfade is having its area of effect reduced from 30 to 10 meters, though a new visual effect will show the radius of the song’s area of effect and the healing-per-second power of the Heal Song side of Crossfade is being increased by 50 percent (this bonus will stack with the bonus granted through Amp it Up).
  • The Sound Barrier ultimate ability will have its area of effect reduced from 30 to 20 meters.
  • Lucio’s movement speed will increase by 30 percent whenever he’s wall-running and he’ll receive a small speed boost whenever he jumps off a wall.
  • Lucio’s Sonic Amplifier weapon will have its projectile speed increased from 40 to 50 and its alternate fire will more consistently take account of an opponent’s vertical orientation when knocking them back.

Overall, Blizzard is hoping that the above changes will make Lucio feel like less of a “need to have” character, but that he’ll still be able to serve as a massive boon to teams that stick together. The changes are now live on the Overwatch public test realm which means they should be coming to the game’s live servers fairly soon.
