Nintendo president says the Mario movie should be officially greenlit soon
Back in November of last year, reports first surfaced saying that Nintendo was working with Illumination Entertainment (the company behind popular animated films like Despicable Me) to make an animated movie based off its Super Mario franchise, but it was still looking for a production partner to get the film off the ground. Now, Nintendo’s president has said that a deal will hopefully be struck soon and that the company is already planning out when the movie will be released.
According to this report from Game Informer, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima recently spoke with Japanese news publication Kyoto Shimbun that Nintendo hopes to work out a deal with a production partner “very soon,” and that if all goes well the movie’s official announcement should follow shortly. Nintendo has already committed itself to a rough timetable of sorts, saying it wants the Super Mario movie to be in theaters before the Tokyo Olympics of 2020.
Additional reports indicate that, once production on the movie begins, Nintendo will serve in a creative role while series creator Shigeru Miyamoto will also possibly act as a producer. For now, all fans can do is wait and hope that a deal is struck sooner rather than later.
