My 5 Most Anticipated Games for 2017
I think we can all agree that, despite the large multitude of great games we got, 2016 was a pretty crappy year. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that games like Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Dishonored 2, Tyranny, and Battlefield 1 (among others) were some of the few bright spots for a year which otherwise sucked pretty hard. Fortunately, 2017 is now upon us which means we have a new cadre of games to look forward to. Below are the five games which I am most looking forward to playing in the year 2017.
Despite my love of Vikings, Knights, and especially Samurai, I originally wasn’t that interested in For Honor since I assumed it would be a pure competitive multiplayer title. However, I have since learned that, in addition to a fully fledged story mode (which can be played alone or through co-op), the game will support co-op vs. AI formats for several of its online multiplayer offerings. That combined with For Honor’s unique melee-focused combat system makes me very excited to play it this upcoming February.
Mass Effect: Andromeda
It’s actually kind of shocking that we’re mere months away from the release of BioWare’s next major entry in the Mass Effect franchise and yet we still know so little about it. I was a huge fan of the original trilogy despite the lackluster way in which it ended and I’m willing to bet that Mass Effect Andromeda will achieve the same high caliber of excellent which BioWare held the original trilogy to. If Andromeda winds up having an even more robust version of Mass Effect 3’s stellar co-op multiplayer mode, that will just be the icing on the cake.
Resident Evil 7
I’ll admit I’m a little disappointed that Resident Evil 7 is making a serious departure from the more action-oriented style of recent Resident Evil releases (though I will heartily admit that Resident Evil 6 was a bit of a mess to put it lightly), however I am also excited to see how Capcom is planning to retool the franchise for a new generation of gamers. Judging from the various interactive and non-interactive teasers Capcom has been slowly rolling out, Resident Evil 7 already looks quite promising and we actually won’t have much longer to wait until we can find out how good it is for ourselves since it’s launching later this month.
Red Dead Redemption 2
After having watched the first season of HBO’s stellar new series Westworld and recent films like the Magnificent Seven remake, I am very eager to sink my teeth into a new Wild West game which is good since Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 is currently scheduled to launch in fall 2017. I can’t imagine how arduous a task it would be to top the amazing storytelling and robust open-world multiplayer which was found in the original Red Dead Redemption, but if any studio is up to the task it’s Rockstar.
As dedicated GameCrate readers likely know by now, I have always considered Shenmue and its sequel Shenmue II to be two of my absolute favorite video games of all time. I’m still in a state of mild disbelief that, after all these years, Shenmue III is actually happening and that I’ll apparently be playing it by the end of this year (a tentative December 2017 release date is currently in place). If I can finally finish Ryo Hazuki’s journey towards self-discovery (and maybe vengeance) this holiday season, that will be the greatest Christmas present of all.
